Cajuns

The Cajun deportation from Nova Scotia.

I often find myself contemplating the Cajuns that traveled across the Atlantic Ocean so long ago. They packed up their families and meager belongings, piled into wooden ships that were prone to sinking, and crossed the great sea in pursuit of something new. They left France to start a new life, a life in Arcadia where the known was much less common than the unknown. They made friends with the local Indians that they met, began doing what they know to do best by living off the land, and made something real and permanent out of what was raw and temporary. They plowed the fertile fields and raised their families. They prospered.

Then our early Cajuns(known as Acadians back then) were kicked out of the lands that they had grown to love and call home. They were forced back into the unknown, after being neglected by France and abused by the British. These Cajuns were torn apart from each other. Families were split, children were sold and kidnapped into slavery. Thousands died along the long journey from Acadia to their eventual homes. Some started again in France, England prisons, and various island nations. Many Cajuns ended up in Louisiana to go back to doing what they knew best (living off of and with the land). They had nothing, were given a little, and the Cajuns went back to working the land to raise their families. They were in a truly new land now. A land that was full of strange animals, plants, and soils. A land that was exotic and hotter than anything that they had known before. Once again, our Cajuns prospered and thrived amidst their new challenges.

And then the Louisiana wilderness that these Cajuns tamed were changed over time. It became part of the United States. Plows that were once pulled by mules or hand were converted to tractors and other heavy farm equipment. Yet the Cajuns never truly changed at all. They were, and are, the same people that they have always been. The Cajuns knew that their hearts belong to their families and God. They knew that their language, religion, and love for food tied every Cajun to the other. The proud Cajuns continued to thrive and spread their unique culture throughout the world. Cajuns are proud, and they should be. Amidst all of the changes around them, Cajuns have remained true to their ancestry. The abilities to adapt, work with what they find, and laugh in the process defines the Cajuns.
