Cajun Music

The Cajun music fiddle.

What goes well with Cajun music? Cajun food, and maybe a few spirits. But before the Cajuns perfected their world famous Cajun recipes, they were singing some great music. There is even a Cajun dance to go along with the great Cajun music! No matter who you are, or where you come from, you just have to enjoy Cajun music from Louisiana.

Here is a list of some of our favorite Cajun music songs, along with a few links to places where you can listen to them. We would play the music ourselves from this page, but the legalities have gotten in our way. Don't let that stop you from having some fun with it though. Take a good look at our list, and then go listen to a bit (or all) of this great Cajun music!

"Jolie Blonde"

This is probably one of the best known Cajun songs ever. While its origins are a bit cloudy, some say that a prisoner wrote this song in the 1920's to tell about a pretty blond woman that left her Cajun lover for another man. Jolie Blonde was originally recorded in 1929 by Breaux Freres. In 1935 it was recorded by The Hackberry Ramblers under it's current name. Since then, the song has been recorded numerous times, by many artists. Jolie Blonde has been called the Cajun National Anthem because of its popularity. The famous Cajun painter George Rodrigue has painted many wonderful paintings of Jolie Blonde, which only adds to the song's appeal.

Original Lyrics:

1. Joli Blon, ma chere 'tit fille
    Gardez donc quoi t'aprés faire
    Joli Blon, tu croyais
Il avait juste toi dedans le pays

2. Eh a ha! Eh a ha!
Joli Blon ma 'tit fille criminelle
Joli Blon, tu m'as laisse moi tout seul

"Big Mamou"

One of the most widely known Cajun songs is Big Mamou. It was originally recorded by Link Davis on his album "Let The Good Times Roll". It has been recorded by many musicians, the most famous of which is Hank Williams Jr.

Original Lyrics:

Why did you go away and leave me in Big Mamou
You left me for another you left me alone and so blue
Please come back Jacques come on back
Make me happy and live with me in Big Mamou

"Lache Pas la Patate"

This famous Cajun song was made famous by Jimmy C. Newman. He recorded it in 1974 for La Louisianne Records of Lafayette, Louisiana. Lache Pas la Patate is a Cajun expression that translates to "don't drop the potato", but a translation that would match the true meaning would be "don't give up, or hang in there".

Original Lyrics:

Hey!

"Diggy-Diggy-Lo"

This Cajun song is by Doug Kershaw. He recorded it in 1961, after his hit "Louisiana Man".

Original Lyrics:

Diggy Diggy La and Diggy Lo fell in love at the Fais Do Do
The pop was cold and the coffee chaud (hot)
For Diggy Diggy La and Diggy Diggy Lo

Bridge:
Diggy Diggy La and Diggy Lo
Everyone knows he was her beau
No one else could ever show
So much love for Diggy Diggy Lo

That's the place they find romance
Where they do the Cajun dance
Steal a kiss with every chance
Show their love with every glance

Finally went and seen her paw
Now he's got himself a papa in law
Move out where the bayou flows
And now he's got himself a little Diggy Diggy Lo
