Crawfish Capitol

The boudin shop in Breaux Bridge Louisiana.

Drum roll please........... The Crawfish Capitol of the world is..... Breaux Bridge, Louisiana! If you ever decide to step back a few years in time and see what Cajun country used to be like, this "Capitol" is a great place to do it. There is a lot of charm in this little city that is hard to forget. The thick Cajun accents, the festival, small shops, outdoor activities, and more good food than you can imagine makes it a "must see" destination in Louisiana.

The story of how the little Cajun city got its name is truly interesting. A fairly wealthy Acadian by the name of Firmin Breaux bought the land from a rich New Orleans man in 1771. A problem that he had was that Bayou Teche cut off travel to his new land, so he made a little foot bridge to cross it in 1799. When people would ask how to get to his land, they were told to cross "Breaux's bridge". Hence the name, and the beginning of a great Cajun relic.

The town got its actual start in 1829 when a Cajun woman that owned the land (Scholastique Picou Breaux) drew up plans for it and began selling lots to other Cajuns. The city grew little by little over the years, and in 1959 the Louisiana legislature declared Breaux Bridge as the Crawfish Capitol Of The World! And it still is.
