The three largest employers in Baton Rouge are Exxon, LSU, and the Louisiana state government. Other large companies that are located in Baton Rouge are Turner Industries, J.E. Merit, Jacobs Engineering, and many other companies that are in the refinery/ petrochemical industry.
Exxon has one of the largest refineries in the world located in Baton Rouge. Exxon also has many other facilities near the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge. The refinery was built in 1940 on 150 acres. The Baton Rouge Exxon refinery creates oxygenated fluids, ethers, olefins, ethylene-propylene rubber, halobutyl rubber, phthalic anhydride, plasticizers, alcohols and acids. These products end up in virtually everything that we use, around the world. In addition to the refinery, Exxon also has a plastics, chemical, resin, and polyolefins plant in Baton Rouge. To say the least, Exxon is one of the largest employers in Baton Rouge.
Another one of the largest employers in Baton Rouge is the Louisiana State University (LSU). With a student base of over 32,000 students at its main campus, it takes a small army to keep it running. The number of faculty, staff, and service personnel needed to keep LSU running makes it an important employer in Baton Rouge.
