If you want to go fishing in Baton Rouge, why not give me a call? I guess you won't, so let me tell you about a few spots that you can find some fish to chase in Baton Rouge.
Louisiana is the "Sportsman's Paradise", and it is loaded with a ton of fish, but most of the real action is outside of the Capital City. Just down the road you can chase some redfish or speckled trout below New Orleans, catfish in the Atchafalaya, bass in False River or Old River, and snapper or tuna in Fourchon. If you're willing to travel a bit, you can catch all the fish you can handle down here.
Fishing in Baton Rouge itself just isn't that easy. This is a fairly large city, and most of the real action is outside of it. You can catch a few though, and here is where I like to have a lot of fun while fishing in Baton Rouge:
Mississippi River- Just head downtown and go after some monster catfish and gar in the Mississippi River. You don't need a Cajun boat or anything, and goofing off in a boat in this party of the Mighty Mississippi may be putting your life in danger. I like to use a very heavy saltwater rod, some large shad for bait, and as much lead as you can put on your line. If you throw your line out near where the Mississippi Queen parks, I promise that you will eventually get a monster fish to bite. 100 pound monsters have been pulled out of the water here, but you need to be prepared with the right tackle.
City Park- Not far from LSU, City Park offers a family a good place for fishing in Baton Rouge. Lots of people chase catfish here with shad or worms, but I like to have fun with the brim. Let your kids bring their poles, fill a bucket up with crickets, and make it a nice picnic. You'll have a blast, and you'll probably catch a few keepers.
Amite River- One of my favorite places to go fishing in Baton Rouge is the Amite River. You can find my hole by traveling down Florida Boulevard towards Denham Springs. When you get to the Amite bridge, find a spot to park along the left. Walk down to the river and turn to the left. Follow it for maybe 500 yards and you will find an area where the river splits. There are some MONSTER gars right there. You can also find a few bass, catfish, and striped bass. I like to use a heavy line and weight for the big ones. You can chunk just about anything out there and get a strike, but my favorite for this stretch is whole brim. I swear that this honey hole is almost a secret spot for fishing in Baton Rouge, and I'm not really sure why.
Other Spots- I do have some really good fishing spots that I don't want to share here. If you would like to hear about them, drop me an email at gtull1@cox.net and I will pass them along. You can also ask me in the Cajun blog, and I would be happy to share with you. You really can find some great fishing spots in Baton Rouge, but you have to be willing to look for them. Cajuns really are good at finding food!
