Schools In Baton Rouge

The Baton Rouge High School is a landmark.

The schools in Baton Rouge, at least the public schools, are some of the very worst in the entire country. Most good families that can afford it have pulled their children out of the Baton Rouge public schools. The situation is disgraceful. How did this happen? What can you do about it? What are the alternatives to public schools in Baton Rouge? Let's discuss this.

Over 50 years ago a desegregation lawsuit was filed against the city of Baton Rouge and its school board. The problem was that black and white students were being taught in different schools, and they weren't being funded equally. This lawsuit ended up becoming the longest lasting one of its kind in history. After nearly 50 years in the federal courts, the case was recently settled. As part of the settlement, neighborhood schools were a thing of the past. Kids on the northern end of town were shipped to the southern end on buses, and vise versa. Once the neighborhood schools were gone, many of the good parents pulled their children out of the public schools in Baton Rouge. Over the past ten years, this baling out of the schools has grown to the point that there are no longer any public schools in Baton Rouge that have a majority of white students. In many of them, there are no white students.

The public schools in Baton Rouge are horrible! They are full of violence, guns, drugs, obscenities, and underachieving students. With few exceptions, your good child will not get the education that they need in the Baton Rouge school system. It's sad, but very true.

I honestly don't believe that the Baton Rouge public schools can be fixed. The courts won't allow neighborhood schools. The terrible families that many of these poor kids come from foster this culture that is destructive. It's a real mess, and I don't see it ever getting better.

Many of us have left the Baton Rouge public schools. One of our alternatives is to move out of Baton Rouge so that the kids can go to good public schools in surrounding cities such as Denham Springs, Walker, Gonzales, and others. Another alternative is to send them to a private school in Baton Rouge. This is an expensive choice, but there are many great Baton Rouge private schools. The last alternative is to teach our children at home. If you have the time to do so, homeschooling is 100 times better than dumping your kids off in the public schools.
