Things To Do In Baton Rouge

The Baton Rouge old state capitol is impressive.

There are so many things to do in Baton Rouge. As the capital city of Louisiana, Baton Rouge is large enough to keep a tourist busy, and it is centrally located so that many travelers use it as a "base camp" to explore the rest of the state. Let's get straight to it and explore some things to do in Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge Museums

There are several museums in Baton Rouge that are worth checking out. The young and old will love the Louisiana Arts & Science Museum that is located downtown. It includes a planetarium, arts exhibits, and a hands-on science workshop for the little ones. Phone the LASM at 225-344-5272 for details.

Just across the Mississippi River is the West Baton Rouge Museum in Port Allen. This museum has a wonderful model of a sugar cane mill, many old buildings that will show you what life was like for the early Cajuns that settled Louisiana, and a lot more. Call them at 225-336-2422 for more information.

My favorite museum in Baton Rouge is the USS Kidd. This is a WW II destroyer that has been refurbished for permanent display on the bank of the Mississippi River. They also have a lot of cool artifacts in the museum to look at, and you can even book an overnight stay on the ship. This is a MUST SEE for sure! Call the museum at 225-342-1942 for the whole scoop.

You can step back into the history of Baton Rouge by visiting the Rural Life Museum. Located off of Essen Lane in the heart of Baton Rouge, the guides will show you exactly what it was like for the settlers of Louisiana. The Rural Life Museum is operated by LSU, and it is a true treat. Call the museum at 225-765-2437 for operating hours.

If you need more ideas of museums to consider to help you find things to do in Baton Rouge, let's list a few other "hidden gems" very briefly. Please consider the LSU Museum of Natural Science (225-578-2855), the Enchanted Mansion Doll Museum (225-769-0005), and the Hilltop Arboretum (225-767-6916).

Baton Rouge Golf Courses

One of my favorite things to do in Baton Rouge is to play golf. There are many very good golf courses in Baton Rouge, and most of them are dirt cheap.

The city maintains seven excellent golf courses in Baton Rouge through its park committee called BREC. These courses are cheap, easy to get a tee time on, and offer some quality golfing opportunities in Baton Rouge. The courses maintained by BREC are: Beaver Creek in Zachary (225-658-6338), City Park near LSU (225-387-9523), Greenwood Park near Baker (225-775-9166), Howell Park in "the hood" (225-357-9292), J.S. Clark Park in Baker (225-775-9008), Santa Maria in the eastern part of Baton Rouge (225-752-9667), and Webb Memorial in the center of town (225-383-4919). Of these, I highly recommend Santa Maria because this was, until recently, a very exclusive private course.

There are also several private golf courses in Baton Rouge to consider. These are: the Baton Rouge Country Club (225-925-2433), the Country Club of Louisiana (225-755-0680), LSU's University Club (225-819-0800), and The Island Country Club (225-687-8723).

Fun Places For Kids

Yes, the kids need some things to do in Baton Rouge too! Here are a few fun places for kids to go to in Baton Rouge, and our kids absolutely love all of them.

Celebration Station, located off Airline Highway near the center of Baton Rouge, is one of our kids' favorite places to go to. They have a full arcade, batting cages, amusement rides, go-karts, miniature golf, and an area for birthday parties. You can pay for each thing separately, or you can get a wrist band that will give them something to do all day long. Call Celebration Station in Baton Rouge at 225-924-7888 for details.

Every kid loves to go to Chuck E. Cheese in Baton Rouge. They have pizza, games, a robotic animal musical show, and a huge area for birthday parties. The old location off of Sherwood Forrest (225-273-2490) is alright, but the new location off of Siegen Lane (225-291-1880) is really incredible.

What kid doesn't like to bowl? The best bowling alley in Baton Rouge is Don Carter's All Star Lanes off of Airline Highway near I-12. They have 64 bowling lanes, cool parties where they blow "smoke" and have fluorescent lights, pool tables, and a snack bar. Call Don Carter's at 225-924-0124 for more info.

Parks In Baton Rouge

There is no shortage of parks in Baton Rouge! We have one of the most extensive park systems in the United States. If you're looking for some things to do in Baton Rouge, heading to any of our parks is a great idea. Our parks are maintained by BREC, and they offer tons of activities including nature trails, bicycle trails, frolf, golfing, horseback riding, archery, star gazing, a zoo, swimming, and so much more. Instead of listing every activity and park that BREC runs, just contact them at 225-272-9200 and ask them for some ideas.

The Louisiana State Capitol

One of the first places I bring tourists to that are looking for things to do in Baton Rouge is the Louisiana State Capitol building and gardens. The capitol building is very impressive! Shaped like the Empire State Building, the Louisiana State Capitol has 34 stories and a tower on top of it. For just a few bucks you can ride the elevator to the top for the best view of Baton Rouge in the whole city. Call them at 225-342-7317.

Surrounding the Capitol Building are the gardens. You can stroll through the gardens at your own leisure and have a great time identifying all of the beautiful plants and flowers. there is also an old armory and barracks to check out during your walk.

Just down the road from the State capitol building is the Old Louisiana State Capitol. It looks like a medieval castle overlooking the Mississippi River. This is probably the most impressive building in all of Louisiana. Walking though the giant rooms with overwhelming stained glass will amaze you. For info, call their museum at 225-342-0500.

Swamp Tours In Baton Rouge

Another one of my favorite things to do in baton Rouge is to go on a swamp tour. Several companies offer swamp tours in Baton Rouge, but our favorite is the Alligator Bayou Swamp Tour. Alligator Bayou is just 15 minutes from the center of the city, yet you feel as if you are "lost" in a swamp once you get there. the guides are excellent, and they will do their best to show you a bunch of wild alligators roaming around during the boat ride. Call them at 225-677-8297 for pricing and times.
